Itinerary
Your exciting week will start with a fantastic breakfast at the St. Eugene Mission Resort, where you and your guide will discuss the weeks events. We will then travel through the dry grassland Findlay valley up, up, way up into the Purcell mountains where we will hike through mature high elevation lodgepole pine forests to our namesake -Howling Wolf Lake. We will have a snack along the shores where you can fish in the cold clear waters for Brook Trout, relax and walk along the shores, or climb to the top of the ridge for a great view. You will have a chance, our first evening together to soak in the warm hot pools at the Resort after a delicious supper.
We
will head south down the trench to bike along the length of Premier
Ridge one of the most biodiverse areas in the Rocky Mountains.
We will pedal along a dirt track over rolling hills of mature
Ponderosa Pine forests and wildflower grasslands, watch for the
tiny shooting star, Arnica or Yellow Salsify flowers all very
common in this area. Keep your eyes peeled and you may see a coyote,
wild sheep, deer or elk tramping through the trees. We will wrap
up with a swim in the warm waters of Wasa Lake, before heading
back to the Resort.
Breathtaking scenery and the excitement of
whitewater will fill your day. We will travel north to Golden
and the mighty Kicking Horse River for a day of exciting whitewater
rafting. You will raft down 16 km's of whitewater and experience
4 km's of continuous class 4+ whitewater, the longest in western
Canada! We will enjoy dinner at the historic Strands restaurant
before returning to our Resort for a soak in the hot tub.
After
traveling into the backcountry we will hike our way through a
mature Spruce forest to get to Paradise Lake. Sitting in this
little nook on the side of the mountain this high sub-alpine lake
is a picturesque jewel at 7000 feet. Watch for the mountain goats
that like to scramble in the rocks above the lake as you relax
over lunch. Try out the excellent fishing opportunities or we
can hike even higher and see wide open alpine grasslands, maybe
even spot a grizzly!
Throw on the saddle and were off for a day of horseback riding. After an orientation to your horse and horse safety, we will travel through the mature lodgepole pine forests in the beautiful TaTa Creek area. A soak in the hot tub at the Resort might be required after a day in the saddle.
On our last day we give you the choice. For
those looking for the greatest challenge, choose to scale the
highest peak in the Steeples range of the Rockies, Fisher Peak
which rises to over 9300 feet. Others will hike through beautiful
wildflowers, marmots and pica, and gnarled Larch trees on their
way into the Fisher Peak tarns. A warm fire, gourmet meal and
hot tubs will round out our last day in the Kootenays.
